Used car checklist: 15 things to check before you buy

Buying a used car can save you lakhs of rupees — or cost you lakhs if you miss a hidden problem. Take this list with you and check every point before you pay anything.

The papers

• Original file and registration book. Copies are not enough. The name in the book should match the seller's CNIC, or the seller should have the open transfer letter.
• Check the registration online. Use your province's Excise and Taxation website or app to confirm the number, owner, model and colour match the car in front of you.
• Engine and chassis numbers. Compare the numbers on the car with the registration book. Any scratching or welding near them is a red flag.
• Token tax. Ask for the receipts. Unpaid tax becomes your problem after transfer.
• No police or bank case. Ask whether the car was ever on lease. A leased car cannot be transferred until the bank clears it.

The body

• Look at it in daylight, never at night or in rain. Repainted panels look slightly different in colour and shine.
• Check panel gaps around the doors, bonnet and boot. Uneven gaps often mean an accident.
• Look under the carpets and in the boot for rust or water marks — signs of flood damage.
• Tyres should wear evenly. Uneven wear can mean the alignment or suspension is damaged.

The engine and drive

• Start it cold. Ask the seller not to run the car before you arrive. Listen for knocking, and watch for blue or white smoke.
• Check the oil on the dipstick: it should not be milky or very black.
• Test drive for at least 15 minutes in city traffic and on an open road. The gears should change smoothly and the car should not pull to one side when you brake.
• AC, lights, windows and horn — test every button.

Before you pay

• Take a mechanic you trust, or use a paid inspection service. A few thousand rupees can save you lakhs.
• Complete the transfer (biometric verification) before you hand over the full payment, and pay through a bank so there is a record.
