Winter Safety in Pakistan: Geyser and Gas Heater Tips That Can Save a Life

Every winter, families in Pakistan are hurt by gas leaks, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning, almost always in closed rooms and bathrooms. These accidents are preventable. A few habits and one service visit before the cold arrives can protect your whole family. This guide explains the dangers and the simple steps that reduce them.

The Hidden Danger: Carbon Monoxide

When a gas heater, geyser, stove or charcoal burns without enough fresh air, it makes carbon monoxide (CO). You cannot see it or smell it. It builds up in a closed room, often while people are sleeping or taking a bath.

Warning signs: headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, drowsiness and confusion. Several people in the same room feeling unwell at the same time is a strong warning.

If you suspect carbon monoxide:

  1. Get everyone into fresh air immediately and open doors and windows.
  2. Switch off the heater or geyser if you can do it quickly and safely.
  3. Do not go back inside.
  4. Get medical help right away. Call Rescue 1122 if someone is faint, confused or unconscious.

If You Smell Gas

Gas has a strong added smell so that leaks can be noticed. Treat any gas smell or hissing sound as an emergency.

  • Do not light a match, a lighter or any flame.
  • Do not switch lights or appliances on or off, and do not use anything that could make a spark near the leak.
  • Open doors and windows if you can do so safely, close the gas supply at the main valve if it is easy to reach, and leave the building with everyone in it.
  • From outside, call the gas emergency helpline 1199. It serves both SNGPL and SSGC areas.
  • Do not go back in until the gas company says it is safe.
  • Never look for a leak with a flame.

Gas Heater Safety

  • Always keep fresh air coming in. Leave a window or vent slightly open in any room where a gas heater is running.
  • Never sleep with a gas heater on in a closed room. Switch it off before you go to bed and when you leave the house.
  • Use a heater in good condition from a reliable maker. Replace old, damaged or rusty heaters.
  • Check the gas hose for cracks and make sure it is properly connected and clamped. Replace it if it is old or damaged.
  • Keep curtains, bedding, clothes and furniture well away from the heater. Never dry clothes on it.
  • Keep children and pets away from it, and do not leave it running unattended.
  • A yellow or orange flame instead of a steady blue one means the gas is not burning cleanly. Switch it off and have the heater checked.
  • Do not use a gas compressor or booster to pull more gas from the line. It is dangerous for your home and your neighbours, and it is not allowed.
  • Never burn charcoal or wood in a closed room to keep warm. It produces deadly carbon monoxide.
  • If you use a gas cylinder, keep it upright, away from heat and outside living and sleeping rooms where possible, and check the regulator and hose.

Geyser Safety

Gas geysers

  • Fit the geyser outside the bathroom or in a well-ventilated place, with a proper flue or chimney that takes the fumes outdoors. A gas geyser in a small, closed bathroom is one of the most dangerous setups.
  • Keep the bathroom ventilated, with a working exhaust fan or a window that opens, and do not shut yourself in for a long time while the geyser is running.
  • Look at the flame. It should be steady and blue. A yellow, orange or smoky flame, black marks on the wall or a gas smell means it needs to be checked at once.
  • Have it serviced every year before winter by a qualified technician.

Electric geysers

  • Make sure the geyser and the socket are properly earthed, and that the wiring and plug are strong enough for the load.
  • Ask your electrician to fit a safety breaker (earth leakage breaker) on the circuit.
  • Switch it off before you touch it or clean it, and never touch it with wet hands.
  • Check for water leaks, rust and a damaged cable, and keep the thermostat and safety valve in working order.

Your Pre-Winter Checklist

  1. Have your gas pipes and fittings checked. Gas companies treat the piping after the meter as the consumer's responsibility, so do not ignore it.
  2. Service the geyser and every gas heater.
  3. Replace old hoses, regulators and damaged fittings.
  4. Check that bathrooms and rooms with a heater have working ventilation.
  5. Check wiring, sockets and earthing before you plug in electric heaters and geysers.
  6. Consider battery-operated carbon monoxide detectors for bedrooms, and test them regularly.
  7. Teach everyone in the home the emergency steps above, and keep the numbers 1199 (gas emergency) and 1122 (rescue) where everyone can see them.

Hire a Qualified Technician

Gas, wiring and plumbing are not jobs for guesswork. Use someone who has experience, agree the price first, and ask them to show you the test when the work is finished. Find electricians, plumbers and home repair experts on AdLagao, compare their ads, and ask for a quote.
