Buying a Used Car in Pakistan? Check These 15 Things First

Buying a used car is one of the biggest purchases most families in Pakistan make. A good car gives you years of service — a bad one becomes a money pit within weeks. The difference is almost always the checking you do before you pay. Use this simple checklist on any used car, whether it's a Suzuki Alto, Honda City, Toyota Corolla or anything else listed on AdLagao.

Part 1: The Documents (Check These First)

Never fall in love with a car before its papers are clear. A beautiful car with bad documents is worth nothing.

1. Registration book / smart card. Check the chassis number and engine number on the document match the numbers physically stamped on the car. Any mismatch = walk away.

2. Original file and return file. Ask if the car's file is with the owner or at the Excise office. Cars with the file "in the excise" or "will come later" cause endless trouble at transfer time.

3. Token tax paid up to date. Unpaid token tax becomes YOUR bill after transfer. Ask for the latest paid receipt.

4. Verify online before paying. Punjab cars can be verified free on the MTMIS website; Sindh has its own Excise verification service. Enter the registration number and confirm the owner's name, model and tax status match what the seller told you.

5. Non-custom-paid (NCP) warning. If a car is far cheaper than market price, be suspicious. NCP vehicles cannot be legally transferred and can be seized. No documents = no deal, whatever the price.

Part 2: The Body

6. Check in daylight, never at night. Paint differences between panels, uneven gaps around doors and bonnet, and fresh paint smell all point to accident repair.

7. Look for rust. Check wheel arches, door bottoms, the boot floor (under the spare wheel) and under the carpets. Surface rust is fine; holes are not.

8. All doors, boot and bonnet should open and close smoothly with even gaps. Stiff or misaligned panels mean past damage.

Part 3: Engine and Mechanical

9. Always start a cold engine. A warm engine hides starting problems. Watch the exhaust: white smoke at start that disappears is normal; constant blue smoke means the engine burns oil — expensive to fix.

10. Listen. Knocking, rattling or whining sounds are warnings. The engine should idle smoothly without shaking.

11. Check the fluids. Milky engine oil (on the cap) can mean a blown head gasket — a very costly repair. Automatic transmission fluid should be reddish, not brown and burnt-smelling.

12. Test the AC properly. In Pakistan's summer, a weak AC is not a small thing — compressor replacement is expensive. Let it run for 5 minutes and confirm it cools strongly.

Part 4: The Test Drive

13. Drive at least 15 minutes — city streets and one fast road. Test brakes (car should stop straight, no pulling), gears (smooth, no grinding), steering (no vibration, no pulling to one side) and suspension over speed bumps (no loud thuds).

14. Check the tyres. Uneven wear on one side means alignment or suspension problems. Also check the spare wheel and tools are present.

Part 5: The Deal

15. Transfer immediately, pay safely. Meet in the daytime at a public place. Complete the transfer at the Excise office in your name before considering the car truly yours, and never carry large amounts of cash — use a bank transfer or pay order. If the seller refuses transfer or asks you to drive on an "open letter" for months, walk away.

Final Word

Take your time. A genuine seller will happily let you check everything and even bring your own mechanic — a seller who rushes you is telling you something. Spend one hour checking now, and save yourself months of workshop visits later.
